Defence and the British Armed Forces have been very much in the news this week. On Monday the Defence Secretary, Des Browne announced to Parliament that almost 900 extra British troops would be deployed to Afghanistan. On Wednesday he was being grilled by MPs from the House of Commons Defence Committee. In an exclusive interview he also spoke to BFBS Defence Editor, Rory Higgins. The topics included the reasons for the Helmand re-enforcements, concerns over Snatch veicles, 'overstretch' in the Armed Forces, utility helicopter lift, close air support and Iraq.

In Southern Afghanistan the deployment of British troops in the new expanded mission is well underway. Next month Britain will take over the running of the Provincial Reconstruction Team or PRT in Helmand. In June the UK Task Force based around a 3 Bn Parachute Regiment Battle Group will go operational. Meanwhile there are increased fears about the security situation in the troubled Helmand province. Earlier this week three British servicemen were injured in an attack, two of them seriously. BFBS Defence Editor Rory Higgins is just back from Southern Afghanistan ...

 It’s claimed the US is considering the use of tactical nuclear weapons against Iran.  It’s one of three allegations made by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh, who also states that covert operations inside Iran itself have been stepped up, and that planning for a possible air attack has been intensified.  The White House has described the reports as ‘ill informed’.
