Thu, 13 April 2006 In Southern Afghanistan the deployment of British troops in the new expanded mission is well underway. Next month Britain will take over the running of the Provincial Reconstruction Team or PRT in Helmand. In June the UK Task Force based around a 3 Bn Parachute Regiment Battle Group will go operational. Meanwhile there are increased fears about the security situation in the troubled Helmand province. Defence and the British Armed Forces have been very much in the news this week. On Monday the Defence Secretary, Des Browne announced to Parliament that almost 900 extra British troops would be deployed to Afghanistan. On Wednesday he was being grilled by MPs from the House of Commons Defence Committee. In an exclusive interview he also spoke to BFBS Defence Editor, Rory Higgins.
